Partner Spotlight: A Conversation with GreenScreens' Jeff Taynton
Team GrowFlow
We had the pleasure of chatting with Jeff Taynton from GreenScreens, one of our valued GrowFlow partners, about how the company is helping cannabis retailers simplify menu management, save time, and create a better shopping experience.
Based in Tampa, Florida, Jeff brings a background in software, cloud infrastructure, and building early-stage companies. At GreenScreens, he focuses on the technology behind the platform, from POS integrations to keeping digital menus running smoothly across hundreds of dispensary locations.
We also got to hear about GreenScreens' latest venture, The Leaf Register, a B2B directory designed to make it easier for cannabis businesses to find and connect with trusted industry partners.
Here's what Jeff had to share.
For readers who are new to GreenScreens, how would you describe the company and the problem it solves for cannabis retailers?
Jeff: GreenScreens is a digital menu platform built specifically for cannabis dispensaries. We connect to a store’s point of sale and turn that data into TV menu boards, tablet and QR menus, and printed menus that update on their own.
Anyone who’s worked a dispensary floor knows the problem: menus go stale fast. A price changes, a strain sells out mid-afternoon, a new drop comes in, and someone has to remember to update the board, usually by hand and usually at the worst time. When the menu and the register disagree, customers notice and budtenders end up apologizing.
We take that manual step out completely. Today GreenScreens runs in more than 175 dispensary locations and integrates with 20+ POS systems.
What inspired GreenScreens to focus specifically on digital menus for cannabis dispensaries?
Jeff: GreenScreens started in the back of a Colorado dispensary. The people who built the first version had worked the counter and saw the old way break down every day: hand-typed menus, paper price sheets that were out of date by lunch, and TVs that froze at the worst possible moment.
Cannabis retail has problems that general-purpose signage tools weren’t built for. Inventory turns over constantly, potency information has to be right, rules vary from state to state, and the POS sits at the center of everything. Focusing only on dispensaries lets us go deep on those problems instead of being a generic screen tool with a cannabis template bolted on.
What sets GreenScreens apart from other digital menu and signage solutions available to cannabis retailers?
Jeff: A few things. First, integrations: we’ve built more cannabis POS integrations on a single framework than anyone, and we’ve been doing it longer. Whichever POS a store runs, the experience is the same.
Second, hardware. GreenScreens runs on the TVs stores already own. If a TV has the Google Play Store built in, it can run GreenScreens directly with no extra device at all. For any other TV, a $20 streaming stick does the job. There are no proprietary media players to buy, lease or replace.
Third, one source for every format. TV boards, tablets, QR menus and print all come from the same sync.
Under the hood, we built GreenScreens on Microsoft Azure, and that choice has paid off. It gives a dispensary with a few TVs the same enterprise-grade security, identity management and infrastructure that large enterprises rely on, and each customer’s data is kept separate from everyone else’s. Azure lets us scale from one store to hundreds without the platform missing a beat. We also built in a safety net: if a store’s internet drops, the screens keep showing the last good menu instead of going blank. Pricing stays simple, starting at $150 a month with unlimited screens.
How does the GrowFlow and GreenScreens integration help retailers keep their menus accurate?
Jeff: It makes GrowFlow the single source of truth. A store connects its GrowFlow account to GreenScreens once, and from then on we pull products, categories, prices, inventory and cannabinoid data straight from GrowFlow Retail. There are no exports, spreadsheets or second systems to keep updated.
Screens re-check inventory every few minutes. When something sells out, it drops off the menu automatically. When a price changes in GrowFlow, it shows up on every board without anyone touching it. That applies to TV, tablet, QR and print, across every location.
What difference does the integration make for dispensary staff and their customers?
Jeff: For staff, it means time back and one less thing to worry about. Nobody stays after close to retype prices or rushes to the TV to pull a product that just sold out. Budtenders spend their time with customers instead of maintaining menus, and managers with more than one store can handle it all from one dashboard.
For customers, it builds trust. What’s on the wall is what’s actually on the shelf, at the price they’ll actually pay, with accurate THC and CBD numbers. They can browse while they wait, get to the counter knowing what they want, and skip the letdown of picking something that’s no longer available. That’s good for the line and good for the basket.
You’ve recently launched The Leaf Register. Can you tell us a little more about it and what inspired it?
Jeff: The Leaf Register is a B2B directory for the cannabis industry. It lists the companies that keep the industry running: POS and compliance software, labs, packaging, banking, legal, security, staffing and more, plus licensed dispensaries, cultivators and brands. We launched it this summer, and it already has more than 300 listings across 28 categories in the US and Canada.
Honestly, it started with a practical problem. We wanted to get GreenScreens in front of more operators, so we priced out advertising on the established cannabis directories. The rates were hard to justify for what is basically a listing on a web page. As we looked closer, we also found dead links, companies that had closed years ago, and “top” placements that were really just whoever paid the most.
So we built our own, and we quickly realized we weren’t the only ones with this problem. Plenty of good vendors, especially smaller ones, get priced out of being found. The Leaf Register became a place where any legitimate company can be listed without paying big-directory ad rates, and where buyers can trust what they’re looking at. GreenScreens is listed too, with its connection disclosed on the page, and it follows the same rules as everyone else.
What industry gap is The Leaf Register designed to fill, and how does its verification process help?
Jeff: The gap is trust. A buyer looking for a lab, a compliance consultant or a new POS has a hard time telling a real, active company from a dead listing or, frankly, a scam. There are a lot of fake “suppliers” out there.
Every company on The Leaf Register is checked against a live website before it’s listed, and each listing shows the date it was last checked. From there, there’s a simple trust ladder: unclaimed, claimed and verified. A company earns the Verified mark by proving it controls its website, through an email from its company domain, a DNS record, or our Verified badge placed on its site. Verified status is re-checked over time, and businesses that close get removed.
None of it is for sale. Claiming a listing is free, the Verified mark can’t be bought, and Featured spots are clearly labeled and limited to one per category. GrowFlow was one of the first companies verified on the Register.
Why should everyone in the cannabis industry bookmark The Leaf Register?
Jeff: It saves time. If you’re a dispensary or cultivator shopping for a vendor, you can scan a whole category and quickly see who’s real and current. If you’re a vendor, a free listing puts you in front of buyers without a big advertising budget, and getting verified sets you apart.
There’s more there than listings, too. Our cannabis industry calendar tracks 120+ trade shows, cannabis cups and retail sales holidays, and you can filter it by state. A news feed covers the business side of cannabis a few times a week. We want it to be the place people check before they pick up the phone.
