New Mexico cannabis regulation history

New Mexico has played an important role in the evolution of cannabis policy. In 1978, it became the first state to authorize limited medical cannabis use through the Controlled Substances Therapeutic Research Act, allowing cannabis for select cancer patients as part of a research program.

In 2007, the state formally legalized medical cannabis through the Lynn and Erin Compassionate Use Act.

On April 1, 2022, adult-use cannabis sales officially launched under the Cannabis Regulation Act, marking a new chapter for New Mexico's regulated cannabis industry.
