Q: What types of commercial cannabis licenses are available in New Jersey?
A: Medical licenses are distributed to Alternative Treatment Centers (ATC) which are defined as businesses that cultivate, manufacture, and/or dispense medical marijuana.
Q: Which state agency is in charge of cannabis licensing in New Jersey?
A: The Division of Medical Marijuana is in charge of the medical marijuana program in New Jersey. Once legal recreational cannabis sales begin in the state, the newly created Cannabis Regulatory Commission which will oversee licensing and compliance.
Q: How much does a cannabis business license cost in New Jersey?
A: The ATC must make two payments with their license application — $2,000 and $18,000. If the license is denied, the $18,000 payment is refundable.
Q: How do I apply for a cannabis business license in New Jersey?
A: New Jersey is currently not accepting new applications for ATC licenses.
Q: How does New Jersey track cannabis compliance?
A: ATCs must keep detailed records identifying the source of each ingredient, including the ingredient name, the date of receipt of the ingredient, vendor’s name and address, batch number, etc. As of January 2021, New Jersey has not appointed an official cannabis monitoring system.
